The line-up for the 6th Peniscola International Jazz Festival has been announced this week and there will be something to appeal to all tastes from straight ahead jazz through Latin to soul.
The concerts of at the Palau de Congressos commence on 3rd July with the duo of, the Cuban clarinettist y saxophonist, Paquito d’Rivera and Spanish pianist Chano Domínguez, tow popularly acclaimed of Latin-jazz.
The second concert on 10th July will feature Eliane Elias. Pianist / singer / songwriter, Eliane Elias is known for her distinctive and immediately recognizable musical style which blends her Brazilian roots, her sensuous, alluring voice with her impressive instrumental jazz, classical and compositional skills. Her performing career began in Brazil at age seventeen, working with Brazilian singer/songwriter Toquinho and the great poet Vinicius de Moraes who was also Antonio Carlos Jobim’s co-writer/lyricist. In 1981 she headed for New York and in 1982 landed a spot in the acclaimed group Steps Ahead. Her first album release was a collaboration with Randy Brecker entitled Amanda in 1984. Shortly thereafter her solo career began, spanning over eighteen albums to date; fifteen on Blue Note Records and three on RCA Victor Group. In her work Elias has documented dozens of her own compositions, her outstanding piano playing and arranging, and beautiful vocal interpretations. All of her recordings have garnered a great deal of praise from the critics and all have topped the Billboard and Jazz Radio charts. Ms. Elias just completed a new recording for Blue Note records. “Bossa Nova Stories” is a celebration to the 50th Anniversary of the Bossa Nova and features her vocals accompanied by a stellar rhythm section and strings recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London.
On 17th July, jazz lovers will have their grand meeting, “Kind Of Blue At 50”. The band of Jimmy Cobb has reunited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of “Kind of Blue”, the disk recorded by Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. Since it’s appearance in 1959, “Kind of Blue” is considered as a landmark in the history of jazz. Jimmy Cob celebrates the achievement with a new recording “Kind of Blue At 50”.
The closing concert will be given by one of the legends of Soul and Rhythm & Blues, Randy Crawford who appears with the pianist and composer Joe Sample to present their latest disk, “No regrets”. Crawford made her name in mid 1970s in New York, where she sang with jazzmen George Benson and Cannonball Adderley. She then led The Crusaders on the transatlantic big hit "Street Life" (1979). Her follow up solo efforts included "One Day I’ll Fly Away" (1980, ); "You Might Need Somebody" (1981); and "Rainy Night in Georgia" (1981); which all became soul standards. Her album, Secret Combination (1981) stayed on the Billboard album chart for sixty weeks, after which her profile dipped, despite a return to the Top Ten with "Almaz" in 1986. Naked And True (1995) brought Crawford back to her roots: it included Benson’s "Give Me The Night", and confirmed her soul heritage by featuring Funkadelicists Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell and The Fred Wesley Horns.
